An Innovation in Training Managers to be Effective Coaches

The Five Stage Process

Stage 1:

Agreeing the needs of the organisation

Stage 2:

One-to-One Coaching with managers for 8 sessions over an 8 month period.

This has three aims:

  1. It creates a first hand, internalised experience of being coached. This means that managers will know the skill from the inside and the personal benefits they have derived from being coached.
  2. These sessions support the manager throughout the process of their development as a coach.
  3. These sessions have a direct benefit for the manager and the business, as the manager's performance improves through being coached.

Stage 3:

Inter-leafed with the Stage 2 personal coaching are three one day seminars on the following issues:-

Seminar 1
The basic model and skills of coaching

Seminar 2
Developing higher level coaching skills

Seminar 3
Team Coaching, further higher level skills & developing a personal plan for ongoing development.

Stage 4:

The Manager takes on their own practice coaching clients from within the business.

Stage 5:

Agreeing a way forward in your organisation for:

  1. Developing more coaches;
  2. Supporting these new coaches;
  3. Embedding coaching as a management style in the organisation by tying it into performance management.
